Becoming a Christian
Why should I become a Christian?
There are so many reasons to become a Christian, I could never list them all here. A few of the best reasons are:
Your life on earth will be led by Almighty God, with His protection, provision, love, mercy and grace. His Holy Spirit will become one with your spirit and be your Guide forever.
Your quality of life on earth, if you are living the Christian life, can be full of peace and joy.
You will live for all eternity in heaven, the dwelling place of God Himself.
Your relationship with God/Jesus/Holy Spirit will be the blueprint for your decisions, attitudes and behaviors which can keep you in a place of wisdom, confidence and security.
Making the decision to give your life to God does not mean that your life becomes perfect. God is our Heavenly Father. He guides us and teaches us. He allows us to exercise our own free will so we can make any decisions we choose. Sometimes that means that if we are ignoring His guidance and move out on our own and make a mistake, we will suffer the consequences. This is all part of His way of letting us learn and grow and mature into the person He has created us to be. It’s a Father’s love and discipline that develops a child into a healthy, mature adult. The world is full of mockers and scoffers. Christians must endure the world’s criticisms, but when the Holy Spirit of God indwells your spirit, you are given the strength to handle this, along with a beautiful inner peace.
How do I become a Christian?
When you decide that your life needs a change and that you are willing to submit your life to Jesus, you are ready to be what the Bible calls “born again.” Jesus said you must be born again. (Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." John 3:3) Imagine a new birth, a new chance to be the person God created you to be. God forgives everything you have ever done wrong when your heart is truly repentant and you are ready for a positive change. The slate is wiped clean. He forgives your sins as far as the east is from the west. (“as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us. Psalm 103:12) In God’s eyes, it’s over, done, forgotten. You truly get a fresh, new start. Nothing else, nobody else can ever give you that. Only Jesus. You present yourself to Him and He sees your heart. If you are not ready for an intentional change of heart and attitude, you’re not ready to receive Jesus. If you are, He gives you the strength to do it! He is all knowing, all powerful and in all places at once.
You do not have to be at a church, with a pastor, or any other person. You can become a born again Christian right now, wherever you are. Follow these steps:
Be sure you understand that this is a turning point---from a life lived for self and worldliness, to a life submitted to the will of God. His love for you is unconditional. You can never earn it. It’s a gift.
Be sure your heart is fully repentant---that you no longer desire to live in sin or the world’s ways.“For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a arepentance 1without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.” 2 Corinthians 7:10
Confess your sins to God, knowing you are leaving them with Him, turning away from them forever. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
Believe that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on a cross, taking your sins from you and becoming the sacrifice in your place.Believe that Jesus was crucified on that cross, and rose from the dead on the third day.- “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures…” 1 Corinthians 15:3-8
Believe that He arose and lives on now and for all eternity as your personal Savior.
Declare to God that you believe these things. “If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
Ask Jesus to fill you and become your personal Lord and Savior. “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”Romans 8:11
Thank Him for claiming you as His child forever!
- At some point very soon, you will want to be baptized to make a public profession of your faith. Baptism is symbolic of the burying of the old self or nature as one goes under the water, then symbolizes the resurrection life as one is raised up out of the water, washed clean, body, soul and spirit. “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4 Congratulations!Praise God, you have just made the greatest and best decision of your life!!
