You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble
and surround me with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32:7
When you think of your hiding place, what comes to mind? I like the feeling that washes over me when I think of hiding in my Lord. He is our Mighty Protector and Defender. When the world is closing in and I’m just frankly fed up with everything and everyone, I can crawl up under His strong arm, nestle next to His heart, and breathe. The quiet, beating of His heart pumps into me a peace that surpasses all understanding. He’s a Shelter from the storm that rages all about, a High Tower of refuge where nothing or no one can stress me. From that vantage point, I can rest, true rest, the rest that refreshes and heals. Then, after my respite, I can laugh at the enemy of my soul because my strength is renewed.
The last part of that scripture is fascinating. It says He will surround me with songs of deliverance. When we have a victory, we are ready to celebrate. If we are surrounded with songs, I envision lifting joyous songs and laughter up to God, and hearing them go out into the atmosphere with powerful praise and thanksgiving. Even the angels, the birds and all creation joins in --- we’re surrounded as He smiles on us. Pure bliss!
The problem is that when we’re stressed out, troubled and heartbroken, we often forget to crawl into that Hiding Place. How can we forget? It seems impossible that we would ever forget, but we do. And then, when we do remember to return to His refuge, to hide in Him, we curl up there and soak in His love and wonder how we could ever have left that place, or forgotten it.
We don’t have to be broken to go there. That’s the good news. We can retreat there anytime we choose. And He is so delighted when we do! He longs to hold us there anytime, all the time. What an amazing gift. An awesome, magnificent God Who delights in being our Hiding Place, so much so that He surrounds us with songs….and peace, and so much more.
