See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. Colossians 2:8
See to it that no one takes you captive. Are we held captive by our belief systems? Of course. We hold fast to what we believe to be truth. I often write about false teachings and deception. It’s not that I like this subject; I actually don’t. It just seems to be what the Lord puts on my heart when I’m writing. Before you dismiss this as another diatribe of warnings, please stop and realize something. This is not about some differences that different church denominations have which have been ongoing forever. We all know that we see through a glass dimly (1 Cor 13:12) and none of us has the exact, correct interpretations of scripture. I certainly do not claim to either. The Bible is living and active and sharper than a two edged sword. It is an eternal living document powered by the Holy Spirit and we will probably be studying the truths embedded in it for all eternity.
The issue at hand with false teachers and doctrines is that within these different types of churches and denominations are the wolves who have crept in and fooled the sheep. (Matt 7:15) The sheep have been asleep or distracted and just plain don’t recognize what’s going on around them. Someone suggests a good book or emails a video to watch and the prose and presentation are so convincing and flowery that people fall right in.
This scriptural warning mentions the philosophy and deceit of human tradition and elemental spirits of the world. The politically correct way, and the ever-exciting fun way, mixed with some supernatural spirits performing, draws people in droves. Most don’t even stop to test those spirits as the Bible teaches us to do, (1 John 4:1) or ask the Lord if this is deception. They just jump in with both feet.
Why would we have so many scriptures warning us about false teachers and doctrines if it was not a threat? When will Christians wake up, stop and spend time in the Word, and pray for discernment and wisdom? That’s what it takes. The Lord is so ready to guide our steps and keep us from the wolves. We must do our part. This is not a matter of whether one should sprinkle or immerse. This is a place where people open themselves up to demonic spirits talking to them, and influencing their decisions in life. Not a simple matter.
I pray that you will take time to meditate on the scriptures, especially the warnings and go before the Lord with your own books, DVDs, and conference plans. As I did that a few years ago, I was absolutely stunned at what the Lord revealed to me. We must be alert and careful.
I’m praying for all who read this and hope that you begin to have your spiritual eyes opened. God has so much truth to impart to us that we don’t have time to entertain the lies. The truth is what will set us free and then we are free, indeed! (John 8:32, John 8:36)
29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. Acts 20:26-31
