If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 1 Peter 4:14
When were you last “reviled” for what you said or did for the name of Christ? Reviled means criticized in an abusive or angrily insulting manner. Sometimes it comes in ugly comments on social networking sites, sometimes through backbiting or gossip, and sometimes for no reason at all other than people knowing you are a Christian. I have a neighbor who passionately seeks out any reason at all to berate Christians, even exaggerating some little comment that has nothing to do with Christianity. I try to be patient, to pray for her and to avoid any arguing. It's not always easy, especially when she takes something out of context to make her point. But then, I must remember that the Holy Spirit is not living in her and she has nothing to rely on but herself and her own emotions. That's sad.
In these last days, we are going to see much more criticism, berating and condemning of Christians. We read news reports daily of situations where believers are voted down, judged wrongly in court cases and discriminated against in a variety of circumstances. We must get accustomed to that and realize that it was all foretold in scripture and is part of the downslide into the antichrist government system. That system is already here, but most of us have been blessed to be untouched by it. This will change. Are we ready? Do we have a plan in place for standing firm no matter what persecution comes our way? We must begin to ask the Lord to give us His Divine strategy that will be for our personal situation. He will do that. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture. He will keep us under the shadow of His wings and command His angels concerning us in all our ways. We must be relying totally on Him and listening for His still, small voice which comes in many different ways. He always directs our paths, as long as we allow Him to do so.
If we are reviled for the name of Christ, we are blessed, the scripture says, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on us. What a beautiful promise that is! Remember also this passage:
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:11-12
There will be some hard days; maybe some of you have already seen some tough ones where standing for Jesus brought you trouble. We must be strong, stand firm, and stand on the precious promises of God that will sustain us. Great will be our reward in heaven for enduring the insults and persecution, to reflect the awesome glory of our God. Let us encourage each other with these promises.
