To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24
Let’s put on a new self this new year! I like the idea. The apostle Paul compares our old self, which is our former worldly, fleshly life, corrupt and sin-loving, to our new self: created in God’s image, full of righteousness and holiness. What a comparison. When we submit ourselves to Jesus and His Lordship, we begin a walk of sanctification, a purifying of our old nature, renewing us into a new person. It’s almost like a fairy tale story, only it’s true. The thought of being renewed in the spirit of our minds is like being cleansed and seeing all the old ugliness purged out of us. Even as long term believers, we can fall back into our old ways if we neglect to stay in the Word, prayer and pursuit of a Spirit filled life. The new year is a perfect time to renew the spirit, renew the mind and heart, and re-submit to our Lord. He delights in us and loves our passion to seek Him out.
We always have free will and can make the choice to be immersed in the world’s ways. We find, however, that when we do that we are increasingly dissatisfied with life and our inner peace wanes. Step by step we can head down a spiral of fleshly thinking, self-focused and blinded, until we almost lose our way. But, glory be to God, He is always there, with His steady arm on our shoulders, gently guiding us back on track. The Holy Spirit supernaturally whispers into our spirits little nudgings of positive direction that help us follow the Light back to the path we know is the best one.
It’s never too late. He is the God of second chances, and third and fourth, and so on. He forgives and never condemns. His patience is amazing. He shepherds His flock with intentional purposes that all work together for good, no matter what poor choices we make. How could anyone not choose to worship a God like ours?
This new year no matter what twists and turns have caused you to feel lost, turn your eyes back to Him, just ask, and you’re on the road again...this time with renewed strength and determination. His love for you is still awesome, is still redeeming, and He is the same, yesterday, today and forever.
